We Debunk Common Window Treatment Myths

Buying window treatments can be overwhelming. There’s an abundance of options, and many homeowners have little experience purchasing new window treatments. We’re here to share some facts about window coverings, and dispel some common myths to make it easier for you to choose the right window treatments for your home.

Blinds Are Difficult to Clean

Blinds are a popular go-to window treatment because of their variable light control, privacy, and versatility. The slats are delicate, so blinds can’t be cleaned quickly, but it’s not hard to do if you use the proper method. Use your vacuum brush attachment once a month, and dust your blinds weekly. To do this, close the slats and use a soft cloth to wipe each slat, starting at the top and working your way downward. When you reach the bottom, reverse the direction of the slats and repeat the steps. You can also purchase handy tools that clean both sides of the slat at once at most retail stores.

Drapes Should Hang on Window Trim

Hanging draperies on window trim creates an unattractive illusion of short, squat windows, and blocks more natural light. The best place to hang drapes is about an inch from the ceiling, with the inner of the drape falling on the outer edge of the window. This will allow in ample sunlight, and create the look of higher, wider windows.

Window Coverings Will Make My Home Too Dark

A window treatment’s primary purpose is to control light and privacy while adding aesthetic appeal to your window. There are varying levels of opacity to suit the needs of every room. Blackout, or room darkening, shades are ideal for home theaters and bedrooms. Try sheer shades for other areas of your home. Sheer shades gently diffuse light, block harmful UV rays, and add a glamorous style to any space.

Window Treatments Clash with Minimalist Decor

This is a very common myth, and one that we enjoy debunking. You can have minimalist decor and window coverings, you just have to choose the right style. Certain styles of window coverings lend themselves more readily to a minimalist style. Roller shades, shutters, and Roman shades have clean lines, and do not take up a large amount of space. They are also good choices for small windows.  Choose neutral colors without patterns to really keep with the minimalist theme.
