Factors That Affect the Style of Your Custom

There are so many things to consider when choosing new blinds or shades for your home. What material, style, and color should you choose are perfect examples. Did you know there are also factors in your home that will affect how your custom blinds look? We’ve put together a list for you here.

Hunter Douglas offerings near Bloomington, Illinois (IL), that affect the style of your blinds.

Fabric & Material Choice

If you’re purchasing Roman shades, the fabric you choose will affect how the shades hang, as well as the amount of light and privacy they allow. Vignette® Modern Roman Shades are available in opacities ranging from sheer to room-darkening. You can also choose from a wide selection of colors and textures, including silks, linens, and tweeds. If you’re going with custom blinds, wood and faux wood choices are generally available in natural colors. If you’re looking for something bolder, go with aluminum blinds.

Samples

You should always get samples of the fabric or material you’re considering for your window treatments or custom blinds. Hold the samples up next to the window at various times of the day so you can see how the material looks in the morning, afternoon, and evening. Time of day has a big impact on the appearance of your window coverings. Darker colors show dust and dirt less, so they are a great choice for high-traffic areas of your home. For rooms that get sunlight all day, opt for lighter colors. Dark colors are much more prone to fading from sun exposure. If your shades have a large pattern, make sure it’s proportional to the window size where they will be hung.

Slat Width & Direction

Wide slats look great in contemporary settings and offer a bold style. Since there are fewer gaps between slats, wide slats will give you more privacy and light control. Narrow slats have a more traditional feel and are ideal for small windows. Narrow slats will allow more light in from the gaps between slats, so be sure to consider that when buying.

Vertical hanging slats are best for wide expanses of windows, sliding glass doors, and patio doors. They are easily drawn to either side or from the middle to accommodate your furniture and door openings. Horizontal slats are the most common choice for interior windows. They can make smaller windows appear larger if you go with narrower slats.

Where Your Blinds Hang in Relation to the Window

You often have the choice of hanging blinds inside the window frame or outside the frame. An inside mount provides a sleek, minimalist aesthetic but does require a small amount of space to allow for the movement of your blinds. This bit of space will allow a tiny amount of light in. If your windows are architecturally interesting, choose an inside mount to show them off. An outside mount places your blinds at the top of the frame or on the wall, completely outside the frame. This provides a simple look and more flexibility since you are not restricted by the size of the blinds as with an inside mount.
